The Challenge of Freedom’s Journey
This year opens with a bang! The fireworks of New Years Eve have only just begun. This is the year of the Hierophant, the Seeker, with a longing for creative self-expression and a love for knowledge using the five senses. Explorations and “world” journeys will be a huge draw this year. Life in its fullest expression will be our teacher. With this in mind, I chose cards from the “Journey of the Maiden” deck for these inspirations. The first five months are pivotal. The choices you make at this time will determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the remaining seven months.
January 2012 : CHALLENGE
Right off the block, the energy of January will challenge us to go deeper and try harder to face our fears and let go of obstacles and stumbling blocks that have held us back. It is a time to explore our world and begin the journey of self-expression in our truest form. Ask yourself : What is it that truly drives you to seek the fullest expression of yourself? And then, what is it that frightens you from reaching it?
Whatever the need of the heart, be prepared to go all in. Stock up on energy and have healthy ways to express the stress of the upcoming months. Divine intervention is upon us and circumstances may not be all that we wish. We must present our best selves to the world and to do so we must prepare for the work ahead.
Underlying energies of the challenge include facing those who are or will be JEALOUS of your success. When you begin to shine your light, many will come out to oppose you, including yourself! It is a sign of self sabotage when seek to be JEALOUS of others. We are all made of light, each with our own unique gifts. Jealousy of others is a sign of “lack.” When we believe that we are missing something we need, we can sabotage our efforts by blaming others or refusing to acknowledge the light in someone else and learning from her gifts. January energy asks us to search for trusted GUIDANCE from a teacher, close friend, astrologer, psychic or our from own inner wisdom.
To completely anchor in the lesson of challenge, we must bring the following quality into our existence in a consistent and regular way – LAUGHTER. It is the cure to all that ills us and is a great way to respond to the “green-eyed monster” of those who oppose you.
CHALLENGE: Put your best foot forward, embrace your fears, and laugh off all who wish to darken your light. Embrace the teacher within or spiritual guidance without, to help you in your quest to meet the coming challenges of life.
February 2012: GROWTH
The journey of the seeker continues in February with the help of the Empress, as we branch out from all that we have known and explore new territory. The experience of DIVERSITY is a great teacher, offering the challenging seeds of new awareness which we may use to build tools of communication with others- a hallmark of the Empress’s blessings. The experience of diversity is an in-your-face confrontation of our fears regarding the differences among us. Whether it be a move to a new home in a new town, a new job that brings us into contact with diverse cultures or religions, or a new school of philosophy or thought that challenges your own set ideas, this month offers teaching experiences that are sure to help us grow. The key to embracing these experiences : ACCEPTANCE. To bear the changes inherent in growth, acceptance must take root in our consciousness.
This month we must envision ourselves like trees. As we plant ourselves in the soil of a diverse new territory, we must not be afraid to extend our roots. Comfort in our own ways frequently leaves us fearful and rigid. It stunts our ability to grow and if we cannot extend our roots, we will remain stagnant and may wither or die. A dead tree bears no fruit!
Acceptance allows us to branch out from what we know and find DIGNITY in the eyes of another. By exposing ourselves to diverse ways of life, we able to acknowledge the light in another and appreciate their worth as a member of a global society. When we offer that sense of dignity to others, we can better appreciate our own worth.
GROWTH: Embrace the energy of the Empress. Seek the new and diverse as a valued teaching experience. Open your eyes and heart to a concept or person which challenges your belief in “what is right” and see the dignity and value of that which opposes you. Plant yourself firmly in the rich soil of acceptance, extend an olive branch to those you distrust and watch the seeds of awareness bear the fruits of change in how you communicate with those around you and with yourself.
March 2012: GRATITUDE
March is a time to check in with ourselves and be grateful for what we have accomplished so far. After two months of extending ourselves and challenging our very concepts of life and living, we must take time to stop and smell the roses. The energy of the Hierophant is in constant motion – grabbing hold of one idea and then discarding it for another. But it too much stop from time to take to assess what it has learned. During this time of rest, the sense of LOSS can be profound.
Tackling new ideas and new territories in life and finding space to bring them into our awareness may have led to conflicts within our consciousness. Displacing old concepts or old friends may have led to a void that we may only notice when we stop to reflect. This month we may experience a sudden sense of grief that we cannot shake. Perhaps we have experienced the loss of a family member or friend, a cherished momento or a home. Grief is our way of expressing appreciation for what we had that is now no longer present in our life. It is one way we process the e-motion of change.
During this time, our HEALTH may tend to suffer. We may not have chosen the best path in which to deal with the flux of our lives or the loss we have been sorting through. Take this time to turn the grief into a melody of gratitude for what still remains a loving part of our experience. PLAY must still be part of our journey. Just as LAUGHTER was an anchor for January, let PLAY become your best antidote to the stress.
What can we still enjoy from life during this time of loss? Seek it out in ever more abundant ways. Growth is only possible if we can accept our losses and still move forward with a sense of gratitude for what we continue to have.
GRATITUDE: Through the tender acceptance of loss, we must remain grateful for the loving memories we still have within our hearts and minds, and seek ways to improve our health through play. Our bodies are our only vessels of experience in this physical reality. Let gratitude seep through your pores as a sign of comfort to the grief we have faced.
April 2012: FOCUS
The experiences of the last three months have brought us to a crossroads in time and space. DECISIONS must now be made. Extend yourself and invoke the energy of the HANGED MAN (card 12) into your life. The hanged man energy involves putting on a new set of glasses to better see our lives during times of perceived crisis. Ask yourself : how have you grown from the past three months? What have you learned? Have your perspectives or values been challenged and you seek guidance as to what to do now?
The call to FOCUS rings loudly. Now is the time to go within and decide what is true for you now. In which direction will you take your life? How will you proceed? The energy of April invokes a cautious approach to your decision making.
Astrologically, Mars will still be in retrograde and will not fully emerge until April 13th,2012 from his backwards slumber. Allow two weeks or more after this date for his energy to steady before embarking on your decisions. Instead, take this time to make lists and do your homework. Be informed, become an expert, research and communicate with people who have knowledge or expertise. It is important to build a solid foundation for what you must do next.
FOCUS: Employ the energy of the Hierophant as the seeker of knowledge and the Hanged Man before you continue your journey. Focus on your goals by checking in with your own inner guidance and with trusted guides before you come to a decision. This is a time of waiting and research. Confusion may reign. But be assured that all things will open for you at just the right moment – Divine timing at work!
May 2012: FREEDOM
We have entered the end of the first five months of our journey. Motion of the planets accelerates and if all has gone well, FREEDOM will be your reward. Having the freedom to choose is the highest of all universal commands. Our spiritual laws are based on the concept of free will. If you have managed to deliver yourself from the cords and attachments of the past, victory will be yours to embrace. Though that triumph of spirit may have come at great cost, the experience of loss has deepened your sense of appreciation and gratitude for what remains.
FREEDOM: Freedom often comes at great cost, but offers rewards for the free spirit. What have you chosen to do with the next seven months of your life? Trust that the guidance you have sought over the past four months, especially that which you found within, will be your best ally as you venture forward.
Remember that the choice is yours. Choose to anchor yourself in love.
